Vern’s Motorsports career spanned most aspects of motor racing from winning the UK Atlantic Championship in 1971, then through 17 Formula 1 races driving for Marlboro BRM, Ensign, John Surtees and Graham Hill.
He competed in the US Indycar Series including Indianapolis, winning Rookie of the Year in 1976, driving for Dan Gurney and finishing third in his own car, a McLaren Ford.
Vern also had a prolific Sports Car career with Gulf Mirage and the Porsche factory, winning the 1983 Le Mans race. Following Le Mans he went on to win the 1983, 1984 and 1985 All Japan Sports Car Championships in Porsche 956/962 cars.
He has had a litany of international race wins and international awards to his credit including the Member of the Order of Australia in 1984 and the Keys to the City of Whyalla.
