Phil Smyth AM

Basketball

Inducted in 2010

It is said that for almost two decades, Phil Smyth was as much a part of the Australian Men’s Basketball Team as the green and gold uniforms they wore.

Phil has been, and is still, a significant contributor to the development of the sport in Australia. He played 356 senior games for Australia and guided the Boomers through the world rankings as their Captain of 14 years, including leading the Boomers through 4 Olympic Games and 5 World Championships.

Fondly known as “The General”, he is one of the finest basketballers Australia has produced and is recognised as a pioneer of the game.

In his time, Phil Smyth was recognised as one of the premier point guards in the world.
