Norma Thrower’s national athletic career began at only 13 years of age and by the time she had finished, she had achieved one national and eight South Australian records, three national championships and eighteen South Australian titles along with an Olympic bronze, Commonwealth gold and a world record.
Norma competed in Athletics throughout the 50’s. In 1952, at the national championships in Melbourne, at age15, Norma finished second behind Shirley Strickland in the 80m hurdles. She also finished sixth in the 100 yards final won by Marjorie Jackson and was a member of the South Australian 4×100 relay team which took silver.
Norma went on to achieve 3 National titles for the 80m hurdles and an Australian record in the same event. She was a bronze medallist at the 1956 Olympics. Gold medallist at the 1958 Commonwealth Games and equalled the World 80m Hurdles record in 1960 at 10.6seconds.
