Murray Bridge 8, “The Cods”

Rowing

Inducted in 2023

Taking on the ‘established’ rowing crews, in 1913 the Cods represented South Australia in the Eight Oar Championship of Australia for the first time. In 1914 they won silver at the event behind Tasmania. They went on to win the event, now known as the Kings Cup in 1920, after the crew reformed after the great war. Notably several of the crew were carrying significant injuries from the war.

Following a fourth place in 1921 the crew went on the consecutive Kings Cup wins in 1922 and 1923.

SA lobbied for the right to represent Australia at the 1920 Olympics. Costs and interstate politics contributed to an AOC decision not to send an Australian Eight to the Olympics in the immediate post war period.

The crew did go on to represent Australia at the 1924 Olympics in Paris.
