May was founding president of the South Australian Women’s Amateur Sports Council serving as president for seven years, was President of the Australian Women’s Cricket Council through the 1960s and a life member, she was also President of the SA Women’s Cricket Association and a life member, was President of the South Australian Women’s Memorial Field Trust and life member, was Life Vice-President of the National Council of Women of South Australia, in addition she was the first female President of the South Australian Institute of Teachers in 1943 which eventually became part of the Australian Education Union.

She taught at Unley High School for thirty years. She had earned Physical Culture qualifications and taught sport and physical education to girls for 20 years.

She helped strengthen the position of female teachers and advocated for better recruitment, training, and salaries.

Always a pioneer and innovator she was the first woman in South Australia to secure a license to drive a motor car.
