Four-time Olympian, Lisa Martin-Ondieki, is the only Australian ever (male or female) to win an Olympic Medal in the Marathon – silver in Seoul 1988 – and is considered to be Australia’s most outstanding distance runner ever.
In a phenomenal 5 year period (1983-1988) Lisa won 7 Marathons and was second in 4. Amongst her many victories were Gold medals at both the Edinburgh (1986) and the Auckland (1990) Commonwealth Games.
Lisa ran 11 sub 2 hour 30 minute marathons during her career. Her fastest time of 2 hours 23 minutes 51 seconds was achieved in winning the Osaka Marathon in 1988. However, her most significant victory came in winning the 1992 New York City Marathon, establishing a new course record (2 hours 24 minutes 40 seconds) that stood for 9 years.
