KG Cunningham received the Spirit of South Australia Award, acknowledging his extraordinary achievements in sport as a first-class cricketer, footy umpire and sports presenter, a career that has spanned many decades and has captured the hearts of all South Australians.
KG Cunningham played 97 first-class matches for South Australia between 1961-1974, averaging 37. He captained the team on seven occasions. He was three times a member of Sheffield Shield-winning teams in 1963-64, 1968-69 and 1970-71. He toured New Zealand in 1966-67 with the Australian team. He was also a SANFL umpire between 1961-67 (total of 130 games including four grand finals). He became one of Soth Australia’s most respected sport commentators with a career spanning nearly 50 years. His many honours include; Australian Football Media Awards Hall of Fame in 2008, SANFL Hall of Fame in 2012, 12-time winner of SANFL Media Awards, Adelaide Oval Media Hall of Fame in 2016, SA Press Club Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021, The media centre at Adelaide Oval was named after him in 2022.
