John represented Australia at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games and the 1978, 1982 and 1986 Qualifying Rounds of the World Cup.

From 1976 -1988 he played 100 representative matches for Australia, scoring 42 goals and captaining Australia from 1982 to 1986.

John played in the Sydney City Championship Teams of 1981 and 1982, and was the National League top scorer in 1982.

In 2003 he became the inaugural Coach of Adelaide United. He also coached at Sydney FC and was Assistant Coach with the Socceroos and the Olyroos during 2006-2007.

John was inducted into the Soccer Australia National Hall of Fame in 1999 and the South Australian Soccer Hall of Fame in 2003.
