Chappell was born into SA cricketing royalty, the grandson of former State and Test Captain, Victor Richardson.

Chappell’s first-class career spanned 262 games from 1961-1980 when he figured in 75 Tests making 5,345 runs at 42.4. Ian was also a brilliant slips fieldsman taking 105 Test catches and captained Australia from 1971-1975, never losing a series.

He played a vital role in 4 Sheffield Shield titles and scored 112 in his final appearance for South Australia.

Ian also excelled at Baseball, winning All Australian Selection in 1964 and 1966 as a catcher.

Chappell became a forthright cricket journalist and commentator following his retirement from the game in 1980.
