Giffen captained Australia during the 1894-1895 Ashes Series and was the first Australian to score 10,000 runs and take 1,000 wickets in first class cricket.

As an Australian All-Rounder he compiled 1,238 runs at an average of 23.35, and took 103 wickets at an average of 27.09. In his last game for South Australia, a month before his 44th birthday, he scored 81 and 97 not out, and took 7 for 75, and 8 for 110 against Victoria. He was inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2008.

George also played football for Norwood in the SANFL. He could cap brilliant runs that paralysed all opposition with superb kicks, turning the tide of play in a moment.
