Gavin Wanganeen played for Port Adelaide SANFL in 1990 and 2006. He was drafted and played for Essendon 1991-1996 and then Port Adelaide 1997-2006. He captained Port Adelaide from 1997-2000. He is a SANFL Premiership player in 1990 and two time AFL Premiership player – 1993 and 2004. A five time All Australian team member – 1992, 1993, 1995, 2001, 2003 and was named in the Essendon Team of the Century (Back Pocket) and Indigenous Team of the Century 2005
Gavin was the first Indigenous player to play 300 AFL games. Amongst his many honours he won the Brownlow Medal and Michael Tuck Medal 1993 and the John Cahill Medal 2003.
Gavin was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2010 and the South Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2012.
