ATHLETICS
Inducted in 2011
In 1963, Dianne (Bowering) Burge as an unknown, won the 100 yards National Crown and was selected in the 1964 Olympic Team. Two years later she was Australia’s Golden Girl of Athletics after she claimed the 100, 220 and 4 x 110 yard relay Gold Medals at the 1966 British Empire Games.
Burge won 16 State and 5 National Titles, and her State Records for the 100 and 200 remained untouched for three decades. She was duly recognised as Athletics SA’s Athlete of the Century.
In 1967, Burge beat the Olympic Champion Wyomia Tyusthe and other top American sprinters comprehensively in the 100 and 200 metre events, on their home turf at the USA versus the Commonwealth Competition.
