Alex represented Australia 113 times in an eleven year international career, played in two World Cups and captained Australia on 30 occasions.

He is the most capped player in National Soccer League history amassing a total of 522 games over a 20 year period having played for Adelaide City, Parramatta Power and the Northern Spirit.

On three occasions he was part of the premiership winning Adelaide City side (1986, 1991 and 1996), twice winner of the National Cup Winners Medal and twice winner of the Joe Marston Medal for Best Player in the A-League Grand Final.

He was inducted into the National Football Federation Hall of Fame in 2007 and the South Australian Football Federation Hall of Fame in 2008.
