An Olympic Track Cyclist having won Gold Medals at the Olympics in 2000, the World Cup in 1993 and the Commonwealth Games in 1994.
After securing Silver and Bronze Medals at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics, Aitken had abandoned his quest for Olympic Gold in early 2000 when his one year old daughter Ashli was diagnosed with a developmental disorder. His wife, friends and training partner Scott McGrorey convinced him to continue. His daughter survived to be part of the 2000 Gold Medal celebrations. In a cruel twist of fate McGrorey’s son died 10 weeks before the games. Ashli lost her battle to Rett Syndrome in 2009.
