Remains one of the most remarkable men ever to play cricket for Australia, as one of the great spin bowlers of the 1920’s and 30’s.
Made his Test debut in 1925 when chosen to play in the fifth Test vs England, he proved a match winner taking 11 wickets at a cost of 82 runs. He became renowned for his accuracy and nagging persistency – a master of length, able to spin and flight the ball with infinite variation. He was the first Test bowler in the world to take 200 wickets and finished with 216 wickets @24 runs taking 5 on 21 occasions and 10 on 7 occasions.
In 79 Sheffield Shield matches, he tallied 513 wickets, an Australian Record that will probably last forever.
