The ability to succeed at the highest level in athletics, swimming and cycling across four decades was a testament to Kieran Modra’s great athleticism and determination.

He began his sporting career in earnest when he took up pole vault while boarding at Immanuel College in Adelaide.

As a 16-year-old schoolboy, Kieran represented Australia at the 1988 Seoul Paralympics in the javelin and the 1500m. He also won the pole vault competition at the 1989 Australian All-School Championships.

A knee injury sidelined him from athletics and forced him into the pool as part of his recovery. He made the competition switch ahead of the 1992 Barcelona Paralympics where he won two backstroke Bronze medals.

But it is his cycling that he is best known for. Kieran won five Gold and three Bronze cycling medals at six Paralympic Games from 1996 to 2016, along with two Silver medals at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, seven World Championship Golds and two Silvers.
